When LIFE photographer Robert W. Kelley shot a few rolls of film at an intimate jazz gig on May 14, 1958, evidently neither he nor the magazine’s editors were jumping out of their skins with excitement…
Why the pictures — which capture the great, groundbreaking trumpeter, then just 31 years old, leading his band in an unnamed New York venue — never made it into print remains a mystery to this day.

Along with five weeks of annual leave, French employees get time off if they work more than 35 hours in a week. At the Hopital Vaugirard, a public hospital in central Paris, employees have accumulated more than 2 million days off in the past decade.

Rediscovered The Thin Red Line by Terrence Malick, yesterday. I think it kind of got lost to the majority of audiences who received their realistic war film kick from Saving Private Ryan which came out around the same time. If you’re familiar with Terrence Malick’s work you know he does an incredible job of combining cinematography, music, and voice over dialogue to extract a deeply emotional and engaging experience from the audience. The soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer, features a choir from the Solomon Islands singing: God U Tekem Laef Blong Mi couldn’t be a more perfect addition to Malick’s scope. God U Tekem Laef Blong Mi has officially become my morning alarm. You can’t have a bad morning when you start it with this.

Joel Sternfeld’s First Pictures

Three decades after they were made, Joel Sternfeld’s earliest photographs have now been published as “First Pictures,” a selection of which are débuting today at Luhring Augustine Gallery. Taken between 1971 and 1980, the photographs document the travels of a young artist from busy streets to barefoot beaches, with inklings of Sternfeld’s now celebrated dark sense of humor, formalist experiments in color theory, and narrative tableaus. The labeling is all over the place here, but I like what you are going for and that stack of Keystone is giving me college flashbacks. Apparently it’s nostalgia day. View high resolution

2011 NFL Rankings by ESPN
I like to get together with some internet pals over at Fark to discuss ESPN’s rankings every week. We were always complaining about how erratic they seemed, so I decided to start graphing the new rankings every week. This is the final product for this regular season. Teams are sorted on the left by their Week 1 rank. Sorry if it makes everyone go cross-eyed. That’s kind of the point. :)
